June 22 - 35mm Screening of THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD - A Tribute to Ray Harryhausen
Our next film will honor the memory of stop-motion maestro Ray Harryhausen, who we sadly lost on May 7, 2013. Harryhausen is responsible for a staggering number of iconic creatures whom he magically created using tedious stop-motion techniques and his amazingly detailed models. His creations have come from as far as space (Earth vs. the Flying Saucers) and as deep as the ocean (The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms), and included a plethora of dinosaurs, sea monsters, and mythological beasts.
We'll be screening a 35mm print of The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973) which features some of Harryhausen's most recognized work. The film is directed by Gordon Hessler (The Oblong Box, Scream & Scream Again) and stars John Philip Law as Sinbad, who leads his crew on a voyage to solve the riddle of a golden map. On their quest they encounter strange beasts and a mysterious slave girl (Caroline Munro).
Please join us in honoring this incredibly gifted and dedicated artist and wonderful human being on the big screen at the Somerville Theatre.
