What better way to kick off Shark Week 2013 than by unleashing killer fish on your weekend?
We've got an incredibly fun and frightening weekend planned - especially for you Galeophobes (fear of sharks, look it up!) - when we screen the classics JAWS, PIRANHA (Joe Dante's original), and the not-so-classic DEEP BLUE SEA, all in glorious 35mm!
For nearly 40 years, Steven Spielberg's JAWS never fails to captivate, even to fans who've seen it multiple times. Cram yourself once into the Orca alongside Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, and Richard Dreyfuss as this trio sets out to stop a particularly nasty man-eating Carcaradon Carcharias (that's a GREAT WHITE to you land lubbers) from eating every tourist on Amity Island.
Roger Corman has the remarkable ability to recognize bona fide talent, and here he assembles a fantastic collection of genre favorites both behind and in front of the camera to bring to life the bloody satire of PIRANHA. Joe Dante, using a fantastic John Sayles script as his foundation, directs a stunning cast in this parody of Jaws, including Bradford Dillman, Heather Menzies-Urich, Kevin McCarthy, Paul Bartel, Belinda Belaski, and the incomparable Dick Miller. Look for some incredibly bloody makeup effects from a young Rob Bottin (John Carpenter's The Thing).
The weekend concludes with a midnight screening of Renny Harlin's schlocky hit DEEP BLUE SEA. Did anyone besides the genetic researchers in the film not think that enhancing Mako Sharks to be bigger, faster, and smarter was a bad idea? Look for Samuel L. Jackson's spectacular death scene, as well as LL Cool J single-handedly blowing up a shark with the audacity to invade his kitchen.
